THE POLITICS OF POP CULTUREDanica McKellar is a 10 to the Power of 100 (aka We Scooped Jezebel)
Posted August 7th, 2008 in Activism, All, Books, Celebrities, Entertainment, Entertainment News and Where'd they go?Danica McKellar shows off her new math how-to book, aimed at girls.
How hot is a smart woman? Just ask Danica McKellar. The sometime actress and model, best known as Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years (Generation X’s version of That 70’s Show), also happens to be a math genius. Now she’s using her smarts and her celebrity to bring attention to the lack of educational material - particularly math books - directed at young women. And like any good activist, she’s not just pointing out the problem, she’s offering a solution. Her new book Kiss My Math offers female pre-algebra students a helping hand in language they can relate to. We’d kiss her math any day!

The answer to yesterday’s WHAT ARE THEY UP TO THESE DAYS? is Danica McKellar
Not enough? Does the name “Winnie Cooper” ring a bell? That’s right, Ms. McKellar was the tween love interest on The Wonder Years. Apparently the demure dame has a brain to go with those looks - or is it the other way around? She graduated summa cum laude from UCLA in 1998 after co-authoring a paper that proved a mathematical theorem. Her series Inspector Mom on the Lifetime Network is a welcome reprieve from its usual “programming for women” who apparently like to watch crappy movies about rapists and child molesters.
McKellar hasn’t abandoned her love of math for acting either. She continues to promote the cause of bringing females into the field of mathematics, and was recently chosen to be the National Spokesperson for Math-a-Thon, a program with the dual goals of helping kids have fun with math and raising money for cancer charities. She has also been intricately involved in the fundraising efforts for various charities raising money for chronic illnesses. This makes her a true superstar in our eyes.
What you didn’t know: She’s the McKellar in the “Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem” of mathematics. Which doesn’t really mean anything to us but sounds way cool.

WHAT ARE THEY UP TO THESE DAYS?
Posted June 10th, 2007 in All, Celebrities, Entertainment, Take a look... and Where'd they go?Isn’t she lovely?

Do you recognize this 80’s celebrity? She was the heartthrob for adolescent boys (and probably some girls) the world over from 1988 -1993.
What’s she up to these days? Where to start with this one. She graduated suma cum laude from UCLA’s mathematics department. She has written and directed two short films, and sported several TV roles including a recurring role in The West Wing. She also did a lingerie, um, spread, in a national magazine. Not to be outdone by genre, she has provided the voice-over for characters in several video games including X Men - Legends and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.
In 2006 she spoke at Stanford University’s conference Proof and Prejudice: Women in Mathematics.
The best part: This uber hottie has a mathematical theorem named after her.
Know who she is? All will be revealed in tomorrow’s post.

Well, we did eventually manage to catch up with his webmistress (which sounds very naughty to us), who assures us that Mr. Damian’s wikipedia.com page is now up to date. Turns out he is indeed married to Ms. Janeen, and also co-wrote two films with her.
So mystery partially solved. Whoever did the slash and burn job on Janeen in his wikipedia page, we’ve foiled you. So ha! Er, we guess.

WHAT ARE THEY UP TO THESE DAYS? - Lita Ford
Posted May 17th, 2007 in All, Celebrities, Entertainment, Take a look... and Where'd they go?So who is yesterday’s bombshell rocker?
Answer: Lita Ford
Lita was a fouding member of The Runaways, one of the first all-girl rock bands to hit the charts. She went on to a hugely successful solo career, including the hit “Close My Eyes Forever” which we can personally attest is still played daily on radio stations in the South, if not elsewhere. She is the mother of two sons, both from her marriage to Jim Gillette of the band Nitro.
Dorothy Snarker’s blog reports that Neon Angels, a film based on The Runaways, is currently being cast, though Lita’s role is surprisingly minimal.
Her fan site LitaFord.net has recently launched and appears to be somewhat shy of members. So if you’re ready to kiss her deadly one more time, that’s the place to go.
What you didn’t know: During the height of her career, her manager was Sharon Osbourne (yup, Mrs. Ozzy).
For those of you who want to see Lita crawl toward you in skintight leather and teased hair once again, you’re welcome.
